The largest city and economic center of Istria, the city is very rich in culture and has a 3000 years old history. Today Pula is a modern city and a cultural capital. The rich history of Pula ranges from Histrion tribes who were the founders of the city in the 5th century BC, the Romans who in the first century city built the structures that still define the contours of the city, to the Venetian and Austro-Hungarian rule that has left its mark on the cultural sites in Pula. Some of the most important cultural monuments are the Arena, the Triumphal Arch, the Gate of Hercules and the Forum. More on the history of Pula can be read here. The most important cultural monument is certainly the Arena, the Roman amphitheater built during Emperor Vespasian in the first Century A.D. which is the sixth the largest amphitheater in the world. Originally designed to host combats featuring people and animals, today it is one of the world's most beautiful culture stages.  In order to illustrate life in ancient times, historical events are frequently held in the Arena, of which perhaps the most interesting is the gladiator fight:
